FDA Citations Against Bayer
Sometimes pharmaceutical drugs designed to help patients have dangerous side effects that can negatively affect a person’s health. Oral contraceptives Yaz and Yasmin have recently been shown to increase a woman’s risk of blood clotting, heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism. Since 2008, drug manufacturer Bayer has been cited by the Food and Drug Administration for problems associated with their oral contraceptive products. These citations indicate that taking Yaz and Yasmin may not be safe for women and that Bayer may not be fully disclosing the dangers of their drugs.
In 2008, Bayer aired a number of television commercials to market Yaz and Yasmin to the public. In these commercials Bayer focused on the different ways that these oral contraceptives could be beneficial to women, sometimes even embellishing on the drug’s advantages. The known negative side-effects of the drug were either understated in the commercials or not included at all. This inaccurate advertising led the FDA to cite Bayer and require the drug company to publicly correct its inaccurate statements and revise its advertisements to accurately report the known benefits and risks of taking Yaz and Yasmin.
Recent Yasmin Developments
Bayer was again cited by the FDA in 2009, this time for the quality of the drugs reaching the market. According to the FDA, some of the Yaz and Yasmin batches released by the drug manufacturer were of substandard quality. Instead of recalling the drug because of its low quality, Bayer argued that they don’t monitor the quality of each individual shipment; instead they review the average quality of all batches pooled together. Therefore some patients may receive Yaz or Yasmin packets that are not as effective or as safe as others.
