New research suggests that the popular prescription contraceptive Yasmin carries a high risk of blood clots.
According to an independent study, conducted by researches at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands and published in the British Medical Journal, birth control pills that contain the ingredient drospirenone – like Yasmin – are twice as likely to cause blood clots than other birth control pills which generally contain levonorgestrel, a non-synthetic hormone.
Yasmin is produced by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals. Drospirenone is a form of progestin unique to Bayer products, and not used in any other birth control pills available in the United States. Drospirenone causes blood potassium levels to elevate and creates a condition known as hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia can cause heart problems and numerous other health issues.
