A woman in Calgary, Canada has joined a $15 million class action lawsuit against the makers of the birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin.

Eight moths after 18 year-old Chloe Papparis began taking a birth control pill, she says she almost died from severe side-effects. The teenager claims she started suffering from a bad migraine headache and frequent bouts of vomiting last August. Her family doctor believed it may have been swine flu. However, six days later Papparis was rushed to Foothills Hospital, where doctors told her she was 24 hours from dying.

“When I was in ER, the doctor by fluke said to give me a CT scan,” Papparis said Thursday. “They found five blood clots on my brain… I was told I had had a stroke and I wasn’t supposed to be living. If we had waited … I would have died.”

Papparis is now taking part in class-action lawsuits against the manufacturer of the birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin, over 800 Canadians are taking part in the lawsuit.

A group of women in Canada have filed a lawsuit against the makers of the popular oral contraceptives Yaz and Yasmin, alleging they were not adequately warned about higher than usual risks for stroke and other health problems.

The oral contraceptives are used by thousands of women in Canada, and the two pills are Bayer’s highest selling product. But some users have reported higher heart rates, strokes, and even gallbladder problems leading to surgery. One of the women involved in the lawsuit, 42 year-old Christine Lovelace, says that she had a mini-stroke last fall from the pills.

“I went paralyzed all down my left side and I lost my ability to communicate. It was terrifying,” Lovelace said. “I guess I am trying to raise awareness that if you have all these strange symptoms complications and you don’t feel right, talk to your doctor.”
