Strokes are the fourth leading cause of death and in the U.S., there about 800,000 strokes occur each year. Many people associate strokes with people over the age of 50, but younger adults can also suffer from them.

Nearly 80,000 of stroke sufferers each year are under the age of 50. A study was recently done on how younger stroke sufferers were diagnosed in the ER.

The study found that one out of every seven people who went to the hospital while suffering a stroke were misdiagnosed. Strokes can be a challenging thing to diagnose because symptoms can vary significantly.

The five major symptoms include numbness and weakness on one side of the body, sudden headache, difficulty speaking, loss of sight,  and dizziness. Any combination of these symptoms occur in a person suffering from a stroke. An acronym to remember in order to determine if you are suffering from a stroke is FAST. F is for face, A is for arms, S is for speech and T is for time.
