Bayer reports decline in Yaz/Yasmin 2010 sales

Posted on April 30th, 2010 No Comments

Bayer’s pharmaceutical revenues have slipped 2.2% in the first quarter of 2010, according to the Germany-based company’s most recent financial report. While the company experienced a net revenue gain in the first quarter, Bayer blames a large portion of its pharmaceutical losses on a sharp decline in oral contraceptive sales.  The Yaz/Yasmin brands earned just 287 million euros this quarter, a 10.2% decrease from the fourth quarter of 2009.

Bayer believes that the drop in Yaz and Yasmin sales is largely due to fewer sales in the U.S., as consumers have become aware of the lawsuits brought against the company for adverse side effects. Approximately 1,100 lawsuits have been brought against Bayer as of February of this year. Patients have reported severe onsets of deep vein thrombosis, heart attacks, strokes, and gallbladder disease as some of the major side-effects experienced while taking Yaz or Yasmin.

If you or someone you love has suffered from negative side effects as a result of taking Yaz or Yasmin, the Yaz lawsuit lawyers of Williams Hart are prepared to assist you with your case. Contact us today at 800-761-3187.

Doctors Warn of Yaz, Yasmin Dangers

Posted on April 22nd, 2010 No Comments

The birth control pills Yasmin and Yaz came onto the market in 2001 and 2006, respectively, and were thought to be safer than other contraceptives because they contained a new synthetic progestin. However, the new ingredient has been linked to various health problems and the drugs’ manufacturer has been named in multiple lawsuits.

As of mid February 1,100 lawsuits have been filed in the United States against the drugs’ maker, Bayer HealthCare. The manufacturer stands behind the pills’ safety, but attorneys across the country argue that the progestin contained in the pills, drospirenone, is the cause of health problems, including blood clots in deep veins (deep vein thrombosis), strokes, heart attacks, and gallbladder disease.

In a statement released by Dr. Sidney Wolfe, founder and director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group, a non profit advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C., Wolfe warns of the dangers of the drugs. “There is reason to be concerned, I believe, about both of them [Yaz and Yasmin],” Wolfe said. “When evidence like that comes up, people should pay attention to it.”

Studies Link Yaz, Yasmin to Blood Clots

Posted on April 22nd, 2010 No Comments

Two studies from the Netherlands linked the use of Yasmin and Yaz birth control pills to various kinds of blood clots.

A study which examined blood clot risks in healthy Danish women ages 15 to 49 found that in 4,213 cases of various kinds of blood clots which were reported between 1995 and 2005, more than 2,000 occurred in women who used the popular birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin. The pills are made with the synthetic progestins: desogestrel, gestodone, and drospirenone. Each of the women had a higher risk for blood clots compared to those who used oral contraceptives made with an older form of progestin called levonorgestrel.

A second study involving 3,200 women in the Netherlands, found that those taking birth control containing levonorgestrel had a four times higher risk of getting blood clots than women taking no contraceptives. The same study, however, showed that women were 6.3 times more prone to blood clots if they used Yaz and Yasmin.

University study shows link between blood clots and Yasmin use

Posted on April 16th, 2010 No Comments

A study conducted by the University of Leiden showed a link between drospirenone and blood clots. Drospirenone is one of the main ingredients in the birth control pill Yasmin, Yaz, and Ocella, made by Bayer. In recent months, the drug company has faced criticism for failing to inform consumers of potential side effects and health dangers.

Bayer required to update advertisements with warning

Posted on April 15th, 2010 No Comments

Bayer has been forced by the FDA to update its marketing and advertisements for Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills include information about the risk of blood clots from use of the drug.

This is in addition to the FDA-enforced requirement that Bayer include that information on the warning label for the pills.

Bayer is currently facing a large number of lawsuits related to blood clotting. Drospirenone, a fourth generation progestin, is likely the culprit behind the increased risk of blood clotting and other serious side effects of Yasmin use.

Advertisements for the pills have been under close watch from the FDA since the company was cited for drowning out the side effects information with loud music during advertisments and making unsubstantiated claims of the pills’ efficacy.

Bayer has so far been forced to run a $20 million corrective ad campaign and must now submit all advertisments to the FDA for approval before they may be aired.

Calgary Teen Joins Class-Action Lawsuit Against Makers of Yaz, Yasmin

Posted on April 9th, 2010 No Comments

A woman in Calgary, Canada has joined a $15 million class action lawsuit against the makers of the birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin.

Eight moths after 18 year-old Chloe Papparis began taking a birth control pill, she says she almost died from severe side-effects. The teenager claims she started suffering from a bad migraine headache and frequent bouts of vomiting last August. Her family doctor believed it may have been swine flu. However, six days later Papparis was rushed to Foothills Hospital, where doctors told her she was 24 hours from dying.

“When I was in ER, the doctor by fluke said to give me a CT scan,” Papparis said Thursday. “They found five blood clots on my brain… I was told I had had a stroke and I wasn’t supposed to be living. If we had waited … I would have died.”

Papparis is now taking part in class-action lawsuits against the manufacturer of the birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin, over 800 Canadians are taking part in the lawsuit.

Canadian Woman Sues Over YAZ "Mini-Stroke"

Posted on April 2nd, 2010 No Comments

A group of women in Canada have filed a lawsuit against the makers of the popular oral contraceptives Yaz and Yasmin, alleging they were not adequately warned about higher than usual risks for stroke and other health problems.

The oral contraceptives are used by thousands of women in Canada, and the two pills are Bayer’s highest selling product. But some users have reported higher heart rates, strokes, and even gallbladder problems leading to surgery. One of the women involved in the lawsuit, 42 year-old Christine Lovelace, says that she had a mini-stroke last fall from the pills.

“I went paralyzed all down my left side and I lost my ability to communicate. It was terrifying,” Lovelace said. “I guess I am trying to raise awareness that if you have all these strange symptoms complications and you don’t feel right, talk to your doctor.”
