Some think Beyaz may just be the new Yaz

Posted on October 25th, 2010 No Comments

Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals has introduced a new birth control called Beyaz which many are calling a new version of Yaz.

Yaz birth control has evidence against it that it has an increased risk of blood clots by 64 percent compared to birth control pills that don not contain drospirenone.

The new birth control pill, Beyaz, has just received an okay by the Federal Drug Administration and will contain Folate, also called B9. It is important during pregnancy because it wards off birth defects. The purpose of the addition the birth control is to give mothers and their fetus a head start if there is an unexpected pregnancy because no contraception is 100 percent effective.

Some worry that the launch of the new birth control pill is to “reinvent the pill and take focus off of past concerns” after the lawsuits were filed against Bayer.

Over 4,000 Yasmin lawsuits filed

Posted on October 19th, 2010 No Comments

Nearly 4,200 people have filed lawsuits after having taken Yasmin, Yaz or Ocella birth control alleging that they suffered severe injuries after taking it.

According to a judge in the U.S. District Court, there are currently 3,900 cases pending in court and each month the number continues to grow. In addition to federal litigation, 485 Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella lawsuits have been consolidated in New Jersey and there are similar stories to this in other states.

All of the lawsuits have to deal with negative side effects that women have suffered after taking the birth control pill, such as strokes, heart attacks, gall bladder disease, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. Most of the complaints state that the birth control pill’s link to drospirenone may have increased the risk of the negative health risks.

Young woman suffers stroke after taking Yasmin

Posted on October 12th, 2010 No Comments

A 21-year-old woman suffered a stroke that caused her to lose the function on the right side of her face and her speech. The woman claims that the stroke was caused by Yasmin birth control that she took twice, once from 2005-2006 and again 2008.

In between the two separate occasions that she took Yasmin and after she finished taking Yasmin in 2010, she was put on a low trycyclic birth control. The woman, who was a very active fitness instructor and cheerleader, began to suffer from headaches and loss of vision and the doctors did not know why.

Then two weeks before she had a stroke, she lost half of her vision and eye doctors found no problem. They day she had the stroke, her parents thought she was sleeping in her bed, but as she continued to sleep well into the afternoon, they knew something was wrong and they took her to the hospital. Doctors found no other cause for the massive stroke except for birth control.

Bayer can no longer censor things in Yaz lawsuits

Posted on October 5th, 2010 No Comments

The court has now ruled that Bayer Pharmaceuticals can not longer edit documents that are given to plaintiffs concerning Yaz, Yasmin and other oral contraceptives.

Previously, the court had ordered that Bayer would be allowed to censor things from its sales guides such as information that the drugs contained drospirenone, which is the same active ingredient in Yasmin and Yaz.

The sales strategy is more than 30 million pages long, and workers with Bayer will have to go through and edit the censored material that they took out to restore it to its original state.

Bayer Pharmaceuticals has been under the spotlight after women began to file suits against them alleging that Yasmin and Yaz caused harmful side effects. In order to protect itself, Bayer filed an injunction that prevented plaintiffs from investigating another contraceptive that was manufactured by Bayer, Natazia. The injunction was overturned when the court found that the censored materials could lead to evidence in a case.
