Pulmonary embolism linked to sitting for long periods of time

Posted on July 21st, 2011 No Comments

Pulmonary embolism or blood clots in the lungs can be increased by excessive amounts of sitting.

A study that followed 70,000 nurses for 18 years found that those who spent their free time sitting were more likely to have blood clots in theirĀ  lungs than those who were more active.

Other factors were also looked into such as smoking, heart disease, body weight and the use of medications. Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism can be shortness of breathe, increased heart rate and pain while breathing.

They can usually be treated, but at times can be fatal. The study was not able to state that people who sat more will definitely get blood clots, but a “sluggish blood flow” can contribute to the problem.

Recently, there have also been claims that the risk of developing a pulmonary embolism is associated with the use of Yasmin, Yaz or Ocella birth control. The active ingredient in Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella birth control pills is called drospirenone and it has been under fire for some time for being associated with giving women a higher risk of developing blood clots.

A total of four studies have been done on birth controls that contain drospirenone and it has been shown that women’s risk of developing a blood clot while taking them is 2-3 times higher compared to women that take older generation birth controls.

Two of the studies showed that the Yaz and Yasmin did not have a higher risk of developing serious health issues, but both of these studies were sponsored by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of the oral contraceptives.

The FDA has now organized a study of 800,000 American women that are using oral contraceptives in order to get an accurate idea of the risks.

If you or a loved one was prescribed Yasmin, Yaz, or Ocella and developed a serious health complication such as a blood clot as a result of that use, you may be able to receive compensation for your pain. Contact the Yasmin blood clot lawsuit lawyers of Williams Hart by calling 800-761-3187.
