Emails have recently shown that some units of Bayer Pharmaceuticals may have marketed the birth control for uses that were not approved by the FDA and also failed to warn women of possible side effects associated with the use of the pill.

According to emails between company members, Bayer officials may have marketed Yaz and Yasmin in order to treat any kind of premenstrual syndrome when in reality, it is only approved by U.S. regulators to treat severe forms.

Bayer currently faces 10,000 lawsuits that state that the drug caused women to experience negative health side effects such as blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks.

Recently, federal health officials released a report in late October that showed the link between the risk of  blood clots and the use of newer generation birth control such as Yasmin and Yaz.

According to news sources, the concern with these birth control pills have grown since this report was released. In the study, nearly 800,000 women who have taken different types of birth control from 2001 to 2007, were studied.

The results of this study showed that women who have taken Yasmin birth control had a 75 percent higher chance of developing a blood clot then women taking other birth control pills. Yasmin and Yaz both contain drospirenone, which is known to raise potassium levels in the blood.

New study also finds link to blood clots and Yaz, Yasmin

A new study that was released Monday confirms earlier findings that women who take the  new birth control pills that contain drospirenone may have an increased risk of developing a blood clot.

The most recent study observed 300,000 Isreali women who used oral contraceptives containing drospirenone. It was found that women who used these birth control pills were more likely to develop blood clots than women who used other forms.

The type of blood is called a a venuos thromboembolism and six out of 10,000 women developed this when taking the birth control pill. This type of blood clots usually begins in the leg, but can travel to the lung. Once this happens it is called a pulmonary embolism. The study has encouraged researchers to tell women to discuss their options with a physician.

The Food and Drug Administration has conducted a study into the drospirenone-containing birth control pills, Yasmin and Yaz and found that these birth controls have a 75 percent higher risk of causing blood clots.

The report about the drug’s safety was released last week and stated that results from the study show that the birth control pill increases a woman’s risk of developing a blood clot. This study was released just weeks before the FDA will meet with a committee about Yasmin and Yaz.

The FDA’s study looked into 800,000 women between the years 2001 and 2007 and it found that the women who used the drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives faced a 75 percent higher risk of developing a blood clot and that symptoms were usually seen within three months of starting the pill.
