Posted on May 24th, 2012 No Comments

An Arkansas woman underwent the first successful complete clot removal of its kind in Texas earlier this week.

The 82-year-old woman had a 12-inch long blood clot  lodged in her heart. She was flown from Texarkana to Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth, where doctors performed a percutaneous heart clot removal using a new technology called the AngioVac.

The AngioVac is a noninvasive tool that is designed to remove these types of clots without open heart surgery.

Blood clots can happen for a wide variety of reasons. Certain oral contraceptives such as Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella have been shown to increase a woman’s chances of developing¬†dangerous blood clots. The labels on Bayer’s Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills are receiving stronger warnings of their dangers.

These blood clots are dangerous because they can have have fatal consequences, including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. FDA advisers voted in favor of the new labels 21-5.

Yasmin contains a man-made version of progesterone called drospirenone, which greatly increases the risk of blood clots.
