An Arkansas woman underwent the first successful complete clot removal of its kind in Texas earlier this week.
The 82-year-old woman had a 12-inch long blood clot lodged in her heart. She was flown from Texarkana to Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth, where doctors performed a percutaneous heart clot removal using a new technology called the AngioVac.
The AngioVac is a noninvasive tool that is designed to remove these types of clots without open heart surgery.
Blood clots can happen for a wide variety of reasons. Certain oral contraceptives such as Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella have been shown to increase a woman’s chances of developing dangerous blood clots.
