Anticoagulant treatment for pulmonary embolisms

Posted on May 21st, 2013 No Comments

A pulmonary embolism, or the sudden blockage of a major artery in the lung by a blood clot, is usually treated by blood thinner medicines called anticoagulants.

After diagnosis, patients with pulmonary embolisms are usually given anticoagulant medicines to prevent new clots and to avoid existing clots from growing. Initially, a doctor will give a patient a shot of heparin, after which a patient may take warfarin pills for a few months.

Patients diagnosed with severe pulmonary embolism will typically use thrombolytics to quickly dissolve clots; however, the risk of serious bleeding may increase due to such use. Another option is to remove the clot through a surgery known as an embolectomy.

Patients prescribed with anticoagulants should understand how to safely take their medicine, in addition to undergoing regular blood tests.

Flying may increase risk of venous thromboembolism

Posted on June 20th, 2012 No Comments

Summer is here, and with it come vacations. In light of the season’s increased rates of air travel, the American College of Chest Physicians has released guidelines to help travelers reduce their risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, normally in the legs or pelvis. It can be asymptomatic, but might cause swelling or discomfort. It is dangerous because if the clot becomes loose, it may be caught in the blood vessels in the lungs, causing a serious condition called a pulmonary embolism. When DVT leads to pulmonary embolism, it is referred to as venous thromboembolism.

Frequently flying can increase a person’s risk for DVT. The American College of Chest Physicians does not believe that having more in-flight legroom necessarily reduces the risk. It believes that people who have window seats are at higher risk because they are less likely to get up during the flight.

Certain oral contraceptives such as Yasmin, YAZ, and Ocella are also associated with a serious risk of pulmonary embolism. If you have used one of these birth control methods and since suffered one of their life-threatening side effects, contact the birth control lawsuit attorneys of Williams Kherkher at  800-761-3187.

Pulmonary embolism linked to sitting for long periods of time

Posted on July 21st, 2011 No Comments

Pulmonary embolism or blood clots in the lungs can be increased by excessive amounts of sitting.

A study that followed 70,000 nurses for 18 years found that those who spent their free time sitting were more likely to have blood clots in their  lungs than those who were more active.

Other factors were also looked into such as smoking, heart disease, body weight and the use of medications. Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism can be shortness of breathe, increased heart rate and pain while breathing.

They can usually be treated, but at times can be fatal. The study was not able to state that people who sat more will definitely get blood clots, but a “sluggish blood flow” can contribute to the problem.

Recently, there have also been claims that the risk of developing a pulmonary embolism is associated with the use of Yasmin, Yaz or Ocella birth control. If you have developed a blood clot after using these oral contraceptive, contact the Yasmin pulmonary embolism lawyers of Williams Kherkher today by calling 800-761-3187.
