Health Canada reviewing studies done over safety of Yasmin, Yaz

Posted on June 16th, 2011 No Comments

Health Canada is currently reviewing two studies done on the safety of the birth control pills, Yasmin and Yaz. Both birth control pills contain the hormone drospirenone and have been linked to causing serious health issues.

Although all birth control pills raise your percentage of blood clots, Health Canada is focusing on Yaz and Yasmin because they both contain that hormone. The two studies that are being reviewed were both published in the British Medical Journal.

The study showed that women (between the age 15 and 44) were more two to three times more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis if they took drospirenone-containing birth controls then women who did not. Health Canada is now studying the risks and once the review is complete they will decide what action to take.
