Cardiologists remove foot-long blood clot from woman

Posted on May 24th, 2012 No Comments

An Arkansas woman underwent the first successful complete clot removal of its kind in Texas earlier this week.

The 82-year-old woman had a 12-inch long blood clot  lodged in her heart. She was flown from Texarkana to Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth, where doctors performed a percutaneous heart clot removal using a new technology called the AngioVac.

The AngioVac is a noninvasive tool that is designed to remove these types of clots without open heart surgery.

Blood clots can happen for a wide variety of reasons. Certain oral contraceptives such as Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella have been shown to increase a woman’s chances of developing dangerous blood clots. Birth control and common side effects

Posted on April 4th, 2012 No Comments

Many women who take oral contraceptive pills experience certain side effects and there are a few that are very common.

Two very common side effects include headache and dizziness. These two are particularly common if you have just started taking the birth control pill and will usually go away in time, if they do not, you may want to speak to your physician about switching to another brand.

Nausea is also a very common side effect and can last a few months. It may be helpful to take these pills with food in order to reduce the nauseous feeling. A change in the mood and mood swings is also a common side effect because birth control pills change your hormones and all contraceptive methods that involve hormones have a change of affecting the mood.

The use of fourth-generation birth control pills such as Yasmin and Yaz has been linked to much more serious side effects such as increased risk of blood clot or stroke. If this has happened to you or a loved one, contact the Yasmin blood clot lawyers of Williams Hart by calling 800-761-3187.

Another 53 people file lawsuits against Yasmin, Yaz

YIn the St. Clair County Circuit Court, another 53 people have filed lawsuits against the makers of Yasmin and Yaz claiming that the use of the pill caused them to develop serious health issues such as gallstones and blood clots.

The plaintiffs in the suit are residence in multiple different states including New Jersey, Delaware, South Carolina, Texas, Wisconsin, Washington and Kansas.

The plaintiffs allege that Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the make of the drug, did not warn them of the risks before they started taking the pill.  These oral contraceptive pills contain a hormone called drospierenone that can cause high levels of potassium. If levels of potassium get too high, a condition called hyperkalemia can occur. This can then lead to multiple other side effects.

Blood clots can also lead to more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes and deep vein thrombosis. When taking an oral contraceptive pill, smoking can also significantly increase your risk of developing a blood clot and women who are on this medication are advised to not smoke.

A few signs of blood clots include blurred or double vision, sudden numbness in the arms, legs or face, difficulty speaking, pressure in the chest and chronic headaches.

Woman, 35, dies of blood clot, birth control claimed to be cause

A 35-year-old woman was killed because of a blood clot that relatives believe was caused by her oral contraceptive pill.

Just hours before the woman collapsed, she complained of stomach pains and sickness. The woman had been taking the oral contraceptive pill for seven years and remained very healthy.

Besides regular check ups, the woman rarely even needed to visit a physician. After complaining of stomach pain, the woman called a doctor with extended hours. She stopped breathing shortly after and was pronounced dead when emergency crews arrived at the scene. The woman’s boyfriend of six years stated that the coroner announced that the pill may have had a connection to her death.

Risk factor of Yasmin, Yaz studied by FDA

Posted on July 14th, 2011 No Comments

The active ingredient in Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella birth control pills is called drospirenone and it has been under fire for some time for being associated with giving women a higher risk of developing blood clots.

A total of four studies have been done on birth controls that contain drospirenone and it has been shown that women’s risk of developing a blood clot while taking them is 2-3 times higher compared to women that take older generation birth controls.

Two of the studies showed that the Yaz and Yasmin did not have a higher risk of developing serious health issues, but both of these studies were sponsored by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of the oral contraceptives.

The FDA has now organized a study of 800,000 American women that are using oral contraceptives in order to get an accurate idea of the risks.

If you or a loved one was prescribed Yasmin, Yaz, or Ocella and developed a serious health complication such as a blood clot as a result of that use, you may be able to receive compensation for your pain. Contact the Yasmin blood clot lawsuit lawyers of Williams Hart by calling 800-761-3187.

The decreased use of oral contraceptives may then lead to an increase of unwanted pregnancies. The recent increase of media coverage and lawsuits that are alleging that certain birth control pills have caused negative health side effects may send women into a “pill scare.”

Yasmin and Yaz are fourth generation birth control pills that contain drospirenone. They are manufactured by Bayer pharmaceuticals and have been accused of causing increased risk of blood clots and other injuries than older birth controls.
