Birth control users with common vein issue higher risk of blood clot

Posted on August 3rd, 2011 No Comments

Nearly 25 percent of women have a vein malformation that makes them more likely to develop a blood clot while taking birth control.

The issue occurs when there is a narrowing of the left iliac vein, which is one of the major ones that returns blood from your lower body to your heart.

A recent study was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology states that those who have the condition left iliac vein stenosis and they combine this with birth control containing estrogen and progestin, they multiply their chances of developing deep vein thrombosis by 18 times.

Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot is developed in the lower veins of the leg and they can travel to the heart. After the study was done, researchers conducted that if women are using the combined oral contraceptive and they develop deep vein thrombosis in their left leg, iliac vein stenosis should be looked into.

What is deep vein thrombosis?

Posted on December 7th, 2010 No Comments

Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body and occurs when the blood begins to thicken and clump together.

Most deep vein blood clots occur in the lower leg and thigh, but it can happen in other parts of the body as well. If a blood clot in a vein breaks off and begins to travel it is called an embolus.

If it travels to the lung and blocks the blood flow, it is called a pulmonary embolism. This condition can cause serious damage to the lung and other body parts and can even cause death.

Recently, deep vein blood clots have been linked to certain types of fourth generation birth controls such as Yasmin and Yaz. If you have experienced deep vein thrombosis (DVT) as a result of taking Yasmin, Yaz or Ocella, you need experienced representation on your side. A young mother discusses suffering from thrombosis  in order to let other woman know about the side effects that are associated with the birth control pill.

The woman explains that she took Yasmin birth control in 2007 from March to August and that she suffered multiple complications as a result of it. Two months after taking the birth control pill, she started having issues with her gallbladder and a few months later she had to have it removed.

Not long after this she then developed a blood clot in her uterus. She had stopped taking birth control at this point for about month and was already pregnant when the blood clot was found.

The clot then started bleeding out and there was a 50 percent chance that she would miscarriage the baby. Thankfully she did not, but after all of the complications she urges woman who are taking Yasmin or YAZ to stop.

A woman from California was diagnosed with deep-vein thrombosis after taking Yasmin birth control pills. She noticed a tightness in her chest nearly two months ago, but her doctor thought that it was an anxiety attack.

Shortly after she experienced a pain in her arm and a shooting pain in her hand and then numbness. The woman thought that she was having a heart attack so she called an ambulance and was rushed to the hospital. After a blood test and ultra sound a blood clot was found in her upper arm.

She was then diagnosed with DVT. The woman said that her doctor told her to stop taking Yasmin or any other birth control and she was admitted to the hospital for a week. Gallstones were also found and her gallbladder needed to be removed.
