Anticoagulant treatment for pulmonary embolisms

Posted on May 21st, 2013 No Comments

A pulmonary embolism, or the sudden blockage of a major artery in the lung by a blood clot, is usually treated by blood thinner medicines called anticoagulants.

After diagnosis, patients with pulmonary embolisms are usually given anticoagulant medicines to prevent new clots and to avoid existing clots from growing. Initially, a doctor will give a patient a shot of heparin, after which a patient may take warfarin pills for a few months.

Patients diagnosed with severe pulmonary embolism will typically use thrombolytics to quickly dissolve clots; however, the risk of serious bleeding may increase due to such use. Another option is to remove the clot through a surgery known as an embolectomy.

Patients prescribed with anticoagulants should understand how to safely take their medicine, in addition to undergoing regular blood tests.

If you or someone you know has suffered through a pulmonary embolism because of using Yaz, Yasmin, or Ocella, speak with an attorney at Williams Kherkher about your legal options by calling 800-761-3187.

Father claims Yasmin birth controlled caused death of daughter, 15

Posted on June 22nd, 2011 No Comments

A father has claimed that his 15-year-old daughter was killed because of the Yasmin birth control that she was prescribed by her doctor for her acne.

According to the father, his daughter was not sexually active and her doctor prescribed the oral contraceptive for her acne and pushed it for off-label use. The teenage girl developed a pulmonary embolism from the drug and her father claims that the doctor dismissed it her embolisms as a skin disease.

She died in June 2009 after suffering from blood clots in both lungs. The man has filed a wrongful death  and product liability lawsuit against the manufacturers. This lawsuit now just joined the dozens that have claimed similar things.

How to tell if you have a pulmonary embolism

Posted on March 22nd, 2011 No Comments

Pulmonary embolisms have been in the news recently after tennis star, Serena Williams, suffered from one and had to be hospitalized. A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that occurs in the arteries of the lung. They usually begin in the leg in travel up to the lung.

Experts have said that blood clots can occur when a person is on bed rest for some time or if they are traveling long distances and sitting in cramped positions. Inactivity like this can lead to blood clots in the leg, or deep vein thrombosis.

A pulmonary embolism occurs when the blood clot breaks free from the leg and travels to the lungs. This is very dangerous because the victim can no longer breath. Nearly 100,000 cases of it occur each year. Symptoms of this include shortness of breathe, excessive sweating, light-headedness, and clammy skin.

Women have also come forward claiming that the use of Yasmin and Yaz birth control pills have caused them to develop this condition. If you or a loved one has been experienced this, you need representation on your side that may be able to help you receive the compensation that you deserve.
