Yasmin gets stronger warnings on labels

Posted on May 10th, 2012 No Comments

The labels on Bayer’s Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills are receiving stronger warnings of their dangers.

The new labels include warnings that state the drug increases a woman’s chances of experiencing blood clots by three times. These blood clots are dangerous because they can have have fatal consequences, including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. FDA advisers voted in favor of the new labels 21-5.

Yasmin contains a man-made version of progesterone called drospirenone, which greatly increases the risk of blood clots.

Bayer to pay $110 million to settle birth control lawsuits

Posted on April 18th, 2012 No Comments

Bayer will be paying nearly $110 million in order to settle 500 of the lawsuits filed against them that each claim that their product Yasmin or Yaz caused the increased risk of birth defects.

According to the judge in the case, the first trial was pushed back and this case was settled in mediation. The $110 million settlement will be split between 500 cases, meaning that each case will be $220,000.

Each of these lawsuits claim that the contraceptives lead to blood clots, which in turn lead to heart attacks and strokes. This settlement was made just days after the FDA announced that the warning labels on the birth control pills would be changed.

U.S. regulators add information to Yasmin warning labels

Posted on April 11th, 2012 No Comments

Bayer AG’s birth control pills, Yasmin and Yaz, will now feature updated information on the warning labels that claim that the pill may increase the risk of blood clots.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that although most common birth controls increase the risk of blood clots, those that contain drospirenone, a synthetic hormone, have an increased risk of blood clots.

The FDA made this statement on the topic: “The revised drug labels will report that some epidemiologic studies reported as high as a three-fold increase in the risk of blood clots for drospirenone-containing products … whereas other epidemiological studies found no additional risk.”

Clots in blood vessels can be fatal if they travel to critical organs in the body such as the lungs. This warning label was announced after the FDA conducted their own study on the birth control and found that the blood clot risk for these pills is 10 in every 10,000.

Colder temperatures could increase chance of heart attack

Posted on December 17th, 2010 No Comments

Medical researchers have found that the chances of having a heart attack increase as the temperature decreases.  In the winter months, it is important to look out for the symptoms of a heart attack.  The most common symptoms suffered include heartburn/indigestion, nausea, pain in the neck, arms, jaw or abdomen, sweating and tightness in the chest.

The chance of heart attack increase by 2 percent for every degree the temperature drops.  Results of the medical study were adjusted to account for other environmental causes including air pollution and influenza.  Doctors believe that the reason the chances of a heart attack rise during cold weather is due to the fact that blood thickness increases when the body is cold.  In addition, blood vessels narrow in cold temperatures.

If you have had a heart attack and are currently taking Yasmin, YAZ or Ocella, contact the YAZ side effect attorneys of Williams Hart at 800-761-3187 to discuss your legal options with an experienced attorney.

Thousands of Yasmin boxes recalled in November

Posted on July 19th, 2010 No Comments

Without many knowing, a large amount of Yasmin and Yaz birth control boxes were recalled last year because of the negative side effects such as blood clots, that the drug has been alleged to cause.

An official from CBS Business Network mentioned in May that Bayer had to recall 33,000 boxes of Yasmin and Yaz birth control for controversy over whether good manufacturing was used in their production. Bayer told the FDA that all specifications were up to standard, but the FDA disagreed and the product was recalled in November 2009.

Yaz pills recalled in Germany in 2009

Posted on May 14th, 2010 No Comments

It has recently come to light that around 33,000 boxes of Yaz birth control pills were recalled at a Bayer plant in Germany in November, 2009, over poor manufacturing practices.

Due to the fact that neither the FDA nor Bayer publicized this fact, it was not reported on at all and until this week was unknown to the media.

The recall was found buried deep in an FDA enforcement report from November 25, 2009.

FDA inspectors found “significant deviations” from proper manufacturing standards, including poor quality control of active pharmaceutical ingredients, at the drug-maker’s plant in Weimar, Germany.

Bayer was found to be doctoring their test results by the FDA. Investigation found that Bayer was taking out-of-specification test results, diluting them with favorable test results, and then reporting the higher average from this rather than the lower average including poor results.

Bayer has repeatedly show itself to be a company without qualms when it comes to misrepresenting their product, even at the risk of their consumer’s welfare. FDA Orders Bayer to Update Yaz Warnings

Posted on May 7th, 2010 No Comments

The United States Food and Drug Administration is once again requiring Bayer Healthcare to update the marketing material for the popular prescription contraceptives Yaz and Yasmin.

The latest update was spurred by new information linking the drospirenone-based contraceptives to a higher risk of blood clots. This new requirement for the company’s marketing and advertising mirrors a recent announcement in Europe, in which Bayer was forced to add warnings about the higher risk of blood clots tot he packaging of both the Yaz and Yasmin pills.

The Food and Drug Administration informed Bayer in a letter last week that the pharmaceutical manufacturer was responsible for updating current information quickly and completely.

More than 1,100 lawsuits have been filed against Bayer over Yaz and Yasmin side effects.

Yasmin Linked to Higher Risk of Blood Clots

Posted on May 7th, 2010 No Comments

New research suggests that the popular prescription contraceptive Yasmin carries a high risk of blood clots.

According to an independent study, conducted by researches at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands and published in the British Medical Journal, birth control pills that contain the ingredient drospirenone – like Yasmin – are twice as likely to cause blood clots than other birth control pills which generally contain levonorgestrel, a non-synthetic hormone.

Yasmin is produced by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals. Drospirenone is a form of progestin unique to Bayer products, and not used in any other birth control pills available in the United States. Drospirenone causes blood potassium levels to elevate and creates a condition known as hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia can cause heart problems and numerous other health issues.

Bayer required to update advertisements with warning

Posted on April 15th, 2010 No Comments

Bayer has been forced by the FDA to update its marketing and advertisements for Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills include information about the risk of blood clots from use of the drug.

This is in addition to the FDA-enforced requirement that Bayer include that information on the warning label for the pills.

Bayer is currently facing a large number of lawsuits related to blood clotting. Drospirenone, a fourth generation progestin, is likely the culprit behind the increased risk of blood clotting and other serious side effects of Yasmin use.

Advertisements for the pills have been under close watch from the FDA since the company was cited for drowning out the side effects information with loud music during advertisments and making unsubstantiated claims of the pills’ efficacy.

Bayer has so far been forced to run a $20 million corrective ad campaign and must now submit all advertisments to the FDA for approval before they may be aired.

Woman sues Bayer after gallbladder failure

A California woman has sued Bayer, the maker of Yasmin, after she suffered from gallbladder failure.

The woman began taking the birth control in November of 2007. By March of 2008, she faced organ failure and other problems. In her suit, she alleges that Bayer knew about Yasmin’s unacceptable health risks, but chose to ignore these risks and produce the drug anyway.
