Hall of famer, Bob McAdoo, suffers blood clot

Posted on March 14th, 2012 No Comments

A Hall of Famer and longtime coach for the Miami Heat, Bob McAdoo, is now being treated for a blood clot in his leg.

The blood clot was found when visiting the team’s doctor a few days ago and he was sent home and told to stay off of his feet for some time.

The team does not know when McAdoo will be back to work, but they think that it will be soon because the clot was caught early. This is McAdoo’s 17th season as assistant coach for the Heat and many said his presence was still felt at the game even though he could not attend.

Blood clots can have life threatening risks if they travel to the lung. Recently, the use of certain birth control pills have been tied to the risk of developing blood clots and deep-vein thrombosis. If mediation in Yaz case cannot occur, trial will continue April 2012

Posted on January 17th, 2012 No Comments

Last week, a judge stated that the plaintiffs in the Yaz lawsuits would go to mediation with Bayer Pharmaceuticals in order to see if an agreement could be met in the cases revolving the claims that state oral contraceptives made by Bayer caused women serious health side effects that they were not warned about.

Evidence in the case can still be found at this time in order to provide information that may be critical to the case. The judge also stated that ‘good faith’ is being sought in the negotiation process for the case and if it can not be met, a bellwether trial will be sought in April 30, 2012.

If good faith is not met, each case will be met individually. Bayer is the maker of Yasmin and Yaz birth control pills and plaintiffs in the case state that the use of this medication caused women to suffer from serious health issues as a result.

Blood clots linked to Yasmin, Yaz

Recently, federal health officials released a report in late October that showed the link between the risk of  blood clots and the use of newer generation birth control such as Yasmin and Yaz.

According to news sources, the concern with these birth control pills have grown since this report was released. In the study, nearly 800,000 women who have taken different types of birth control from 2001 to 2007, were studied.

The results of this study showed that women who have taken Yasmin birth control had a 75 percent higher chance of developing a blood clot then women taking other birth control pills. Yasmin and Yaz both contain drospirenone, which is known to raise potassium levels in the blood.

A new study that was released Monday confirms earlier findings that women who take the  new birth control pills that contain drospirenone may have an increased risk of developing a blood clot.

The most recent study observed 300,000 Isreali women who used oral contraceptives containing drospirenone. It was found that women who used these birth control pills were more likely to develop blood clots than women who used other forms.

The type of blood is called a a venuos thromboembolism and six out of 10,000 women developed this when taking the birth control pill. This type of blood clots usually begins in the leg, but can travel to the lung. Once this happens it is called a pulmonary embolism. The study has encouraged researchers to tell women to discuss their options with a physician.

An actress is suing Bayer Pharmaceuticals claiming that Yasmin birth control pills caused her to have a stroke at age 27.

Brenda Hamilton, an under study actress for the Broadway play “Wicked,” claims in her lawsuit that Bayer knew that Yasmin had a greater risk for strokes than other birth control pills and withheld the information. The actress had no history of health issues when she suffered the stroke.

Sources say that the Yasmin website does state the oral contraceptives are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular issues. Hamilton’s lawsuit is just one of the 1,100 suits that the birth control pill lead to life-threatening health issues.

Recalling a commercial

Posted on May 28th, 2010 No Comments

Yaz and Yasmin are two of the most popular and best-selling birth control pills in the United States.  However, the Food and Drug Administration found several of Yaz and Yasmin advertisements to be misleading due to the fact that they downplayed the side affects associated with the drug and portrayed them as safer than they have been proven to be.  With this information, the FDA sent the Yaz and Yasmin manufacturers three warning letters.

The first letter, sent in 2003, stated that Yasmin ads portrayed the drug as safer than it has been proven to be through substantial clinical experience.  The second warning letter, sent in 2008, is the letter that lead to a confusing Yaz commercial you may have seen.  The letter stated that Yaz commercials made it seem as though the drugs could treat PMS and acne.  As a result of this letter, the makers of Yaz were forced to run a $20 million advertising campaign to clarify the use and potential side effects of Yaz.

The third letter, sent by the FDA to Bayer, the makers of Yaz and Yasmin in 2009, again found that they were overstating the benefits of Yaz and the problems Yaz was designed to treat.

If you believe you have been mislead by a Yaz or Yasmin advertisement and have suffered any side effects resulting from your taking of the birth control drug, you can contact the Yaz lawsuit attorneys of Williams Hart by calling 800-761-3187.

Yasmin experiences drop in sales

Posted on May 21st, 2010 No Comments

Bayer, the parent company that manufactures Yaz and Yasmin birth control pills, has announced a sales drop of 10.2 percent this quarter.

Representatives state that the drop may have been in response to increasing concerns over blood clots and other side effects from Yaz and Yasmin. Over the past few months, the number of lawsuits filed by women who have suffered from severe or life-threating illness and injury during or after taking the contraceptives have increased. The drop in sales is out of sync with the rest of the company’s sales and earning, which saw an increase of 5.3 percent.

Yaz pills recalled in Germany in 2009

Posted on May 14th, 2010 No Comments

It has recently come to light that around 33,000 boxes of Yaz birth control pills were recalled at a Bayer plant in Germany in November, 2009, over poor manufacturing practices.

Due to the fact that neither the FDA nor Bayer publicized this fact, it was not reported on at all and until this week was unknown to the media.

The recall was found buried deep in an FDA enforcement report from November 25, 2009.

FDA inspectors found “significant deviations” from proper manufacturing standards, including poor quality control of active pharmaceutical ingredients, at the drug-maker’s plant in Weimar, Germany.

Bayer was found to be doctoring their test results by the FDA. Investigation found that Bayer was taking out-of-specification test results, diluting them with favorable test results, and then reporting the higher average from this rather than the lower average including poor results.

Bayer has repeatedly show itself to be a company without qualms when it comes to misrepresenting their product, even at the risk of their consumer’s welfare. If you or someone you know has been a victim of Yaz birth control pill side-effects, the Yaz lawsuit lawyers of Williams Hart are prepared to assist you with your case.
