The connection between birth control and blood clots

Posted on January 6th, 2012 No Comments

New research on the effects of the popular birth control, Yaz, has found a link between one of the key ingredients and blood clots.

The hormone progestin, drospirenone, has been connected to the increased chance of developing a blood clot in the lungs or in the legs. The findings in the FDA report show that 10 out of every 10,000 women taking birth control with drospirenone will experience a blood clot as compared to only 6 out of every 10,000 women who are prescribed birth control without the hormone progrestin, drospirenone.

The FDA panel members made an executive decision, in a 15-11 vote, that the benefits outweigh the risks when dealing with contraceptives that contain drospirenone. The panel did, however, make the statement that they believe the labeling should be updated to clearly state the connection between this type of contraceptive and the higher possibility of blood clots.

FDA sends warning for Drospirenone birth controls

The Food and Drug Administration has announced that there are still concerns about oral contraceptives containing drospirenone and the link to blood clots.

A study was done in order to compare birth control pills that contain drospirenone and those that do not. This was done in order to determine if the risk of blood clot was higher with either one.

The study involved 800,000 women and it was found that there was a 1.5-fold increase in the risk that they will develop blood clots.

Advisory panel sought for Yaz study

The FDA released a note warning of the increased risk of blood clot associated with new generation birth control, Yaz or Yasmin.

It did not say for sure that using the birth control will lead to this, but regulators stated that they are concerned of higher risks. Yasmin and Yaz are both very popular birth control pills and they both contain an ingredient, drospirenone, which may cause Deep-vein thrombosis.

This occurs when a blood clot happens in an extremity, such as the leg, and they become very dangerous if the clot moves to another vital organ. Symptoms include chest pain, leg pain and difficulty breathing. Preliminary results show that women who take drospirenone-containing birth control pills are 50 percent more likely to develop these blood clots than woman who took other contraceptives.

If you or a loved one has been taking either of these birth control pills and suffered a blood clot without being warning of the increased risk, contact the Yasmin blood clot lawyers of Williams Hart today by calling 800-761-3187.

Bayer faces lawsuit after young woman dies of blood clot

Posted on May 11th, 2011 No Comments

Bayer Pharmaceuticals is facing a lawsuit after an 18-year-old college student died of a blood clot that was allegedly linked to the Yaz oral birth control that she was taking.

The suit states that the woman was taking Yaz in order to treat acne when she died of a cardiac arrest attack last September.

According to the suit, Bayer failed to warn doctors of the potential side effects that were associated with the new generation of birth control pills compared to older ones. The family came forward in order to prevent the same thing from happening to other families.

Our deepest thoughts and condolences are with the friends and family of the victim.

St. Clair County sees two more Yaz lawsuits

Two more Yaz lawsuits have been filed in the St. Clair County Circuit Court. The lawsuits are filed against the manufacturers of the oral contraceptives Yasmin and Yaz.

The lawsuit claims that after taking the birth control, the women developed blood clots and gallstones. The lawsuit comes after commercials ran a few years ago about some side effects that were allegedly developed after taking the pill. From 2004 to 2008, Yaz has reportedly caused more than 50 deaths, which occurred in women as young as the age of 17.

Canadian doctors fear Yasmin will scare woman from using oral contraceptives

Canadian doctors are fearing the the negative health side effects that are associated with Yasmin and Yaz are going to scare woman from using any oral contraceptive.

The decreased use of oral contraceptives may then lead to an increase of unwanted pregnancies. The recent increase of media coverage and lawsuits that are alleging that certain birth control pills have caused negative health side effects may send women into a “pill scare.”

Yasmin and Yaz are fourth generation birth control pills that contain drospirenone. They are manufactured by Bayer pharmaceuticals and have been accused of causing increased risk of blood clots and other injuries than older birth controls.

If you or a loved one has suffered from a blood clot after taking Yasmin, Yaz, or Ocella, you need experienced representation on your side that may be able to help you receive the compensation for your pain that you deserve.
